Donald Trump has won the election to become president of the United States. Trump's campaign to the presidency was marred in constant controversy involving racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and a "me-centered" leaning in his approach to things. This can become very problematic in the new paradigm which requires a completely different approach.
I had the chance to see the new Dr. Strange movie, produced by Marvel Comics. The movie is about a self-absorbed surgeon who goes through a profound transformation because of a life-altering event. (SPOILER ALERT) In the movie, there is a specific scene where Dr. Strange's original teacher, "the ancient one", tells Strange that true enlightenment and access to his true powers begins when he recognizes one thing --- it's not about him. This is true of the shift we're in now. The most effective forms of leadership now are ones where it;s not about me, but "we" Here are five elements of this new we-centered leadership model that is more efficient, effective and regenerative.
We-centered organizations foster more creativity. Hierarchies are all about pleasing the one guy at the top. Everyone on the chain knows this, so they seek only to bring conventional and safe ideas to this person at the top in order to keep their jobs via keeping this person at the top happy. Lateral organizations where everyone has agency, it is about fostering individual thought and creativity so that everyone in the organization is pleased and creative without the fear of losing their jobs.
We-centered organizations foster collaboration. In an it's about me centered organization, the me person tends to keep ideas to themselves for fear of losing power. In an others centered group, information is shared so that everyone can work together and collaborate. The organization benefits, the workload is shared and everyone has a sense of agency.
We-centered organizations produces greater "esprit de corp". When people see that they are valued, they make a deeper commitment to the organization. People have a natural tendency to be loyal to places where they are treated fairly and with honor.
We-centered organizations are better in an online connected world. If people are working online in the world, they are in their own environment where they are queen or king. They expect others to respect that domain. Acknowledging that space would be the best way of creating a productive line.
We-centered organizations match the rising world philosophy of Ubuntu (I am because we are, we are because I am). In the me centered world of the old paradigm, you could get away with treating people terribly because it wasn't about them. It was about you. In an increasingly connected and globally competent world, being We centered is simple respect. This is the foundation of the new world philosophy of Ubuntu which says our success are shared as is our challenges. Looking out for others means that they will reciprocate and look out for you too.
