There is a great article written by an American self-proclaimed recovering Republican Chris Ladd. While there is a point or two I disagree with, this part of his discussion was particularly compelling...
"It is easy to use delusions to obstruct and destroy. Building something is hard. Building something valuable means thinking about consequences and confronting weaknesses in an ideological framework. Building something invites consequences. Republicans cannot govern because Republicans lack any respect for facts. Tilting at windmills is much easier than constructing them."
Progressives in the United States or opposition parties around the world may use this as fodder for their own particular position against the other guy. But allow me to drill down even more. The above paragraph relates to leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution/World Shift. There are a lot of people taking positions as to what they don't want to happen in the world. That's nice, but now it's time to actually talk about what you do want and how you would like to implement those ideas. This is when you move from protest to leadership. It is time for something more profound than "resistance". It now requires getting in the weeds, rolling up the sleeves and constructing something better than the thing you don't like. Granted, that's not the stuff everyone is made of. I get that. But we are living in exceptional times, which calls for the few exceptional people to be exceptional, and for the rest of us to support their efforts.
There are models of leadership being provided. But by my estimation, those models are primarily well-funded ideas of the status quo. Their ideas seem profound, but they are only profound because other more dynamic ideas are simply not as well funded and aren't even allowed on the same stage. They tend to be regulated to the category of "fringe", "unpopular" or even "radical". In a true Democracy, the marketplace of ideas isn't afraid of new ideas. The Fourth Industrial Revolution/World Shift is demanding that we open up this marketplace of ideas to see what fits best in this time of change. Without broadening our capacity, we get the kind of turmoil that seems to be enveloping the world today. There is significant cognitive dissonance between what technology provides, what being human requires and the general lack of imagination we have in our leadership in many places of the world.
I often speak of bolder, more innovative leadership, not because it's cute or romantic, but because it requires work that requires time. Unfortunately, time is something we are quickly running out of. The window for fresh thinking and action is there, but we have to see it, first.
