About this time every year, Futurists look over their notes to see if they can come up with predictions for the coming year. Not to be left out of the crowd, I too have some "predictions" that I'd like to offer for 2019...but they are more like suggestions, advice to help you thrive and succeed in the most dramatic time of change in the history of humanity. That's not hyperbole. This conflation of advanced AI, climate change and economic inequality has never happened before. That means business as usual will not be enough to answer this emerging crisis. This actually can be a great opportunity if we see it as such. With that in mind, here are my "predictions"/suggestions we'll need to do in 2019 in order to intend a transformed future that works.
A dramatic and very public pivot to clean energy. Despite what the current Federal administration in the US is saying about climate change, "clean coal" and doubling down on fossil fuel, the smart money is all flowing toward clean energy. This shift is going to take a very high profile turn in 2019 as company after company launch ready to go clean energy solutions, such as this one....https://www.ge.com/reports/call-ecomagination-ge-building-co2-powered-turbine-generates-10-megawatts-fits-table/
The IPCC report on climate change that sounded the alarm on the urgency of doing something about this crisis right now has opened the flood gate to these kinds of inventions. Stay up on local, state and regional regulations. That's the barometer of where the money is going. This year is the time to invest in ethical companies leading this charge.
The merger of sustainable communities with retirement communities. This seems like a no-brainer to me. Developers are forwarding the idea of making retirement communities completely green, autonomous and sustainable. These will, in effect, be the blueprint for all communities in the future. This re-imagining of how communities will work will be fueled by the autonomous car revolution, food security opportunities from indoor farming due to drought and floods and the fast growing and ageing baby boom population. Look for a major play on this in 2019.
New data of testing of 21st century economic models. The real challenge that plagues a lot of the world is that current economic systems, based on the top down scarcity model are not robust enough to work efficiently in a rapidly changing societal foundation. They simply cannot compete effectively in a 21st century that features super efficient technology, climate change adaptation and massive income inequality. In 2019, there will be a rush of data from test models that utilize new economies organized around these three factors. From global testing of Universal Basic Income models to the global testing of Universal Basic Resources models (my initiative), data will stream in this year to share what options are possible. Here are the models to watch:
The autonomous automobile revolution social disruption starts in earnest this year. Did you know that cars are parked 95% of the time? They are a tremendous and incredible wasted asset, which makes autonomous cars that are moving all the time, a giant leap in efficiency. Cities are now doing their first phase of planning around this development, especially as how the loss of revenue from parking and speeding tickets and auto registration. This will be a hot button issue because social programs will be disrupted because of the income loss. The mere projection of these losses are sending a lot of metro areas scrambling. We'll be monitoring these development here in this blog.

Welcome to a new year and a new opportunity to create transformation!
Diversity will be one of the hottest and most important issues of the immediate future and the new world emerging. After centuries of cultures seeking to create mono societies, leadership, housing and even crop production, we are now taking a look at the sample set by nature in biodiversity --- the more diverse structures are, the stronger they are. http://www.globalissues.org/article/170/why-is-biodiversity-important-who-cares
But the conversation of human diversity is now becoming more nuanced. There was a time where companies, organizations and communities felt that you could solve diversity issues by plugging in people who looked differently than you did, but thought the same way. In other words, you still had the same mono culture, but in different shades. The problem with this version of diversity is that it doesn't lead to the greatest level of innovation and possibilities an organization or society can enjoy. This form of "mono-diversity" usually leads to the same kind of results you'd have if you didn't diversify at all. Mono-diversity or faux diversity is like leaving money on the table: why would any organization settle for less when there is more available? True and effective human diversity takes into account other people's lifestyles, experiences, thought processes and visions. This kind of true diversity of thought in leadership very well could have avoided the extinction level event we face today called climate change.
There are those who will seek to mount a campaign that will negate incorporating people from different ethnic cultures into their organization by saying "we don't need the 'cultural other'. We have diversity of thought within our ranks". This, again, is faux diversity and often is used as a cover for subtle racism. True diversity recognizes that, using a foundational framework, organizations become stronger, more adept at figuring out global terrains and, quite frankly, less boring and more dynamic. Here are some of the other gifts that true diversity, leveraging diversity of thought, bring to the table:
More unconsidered solutions. In mono cultures, all solutions come from the same source, which may be exactly what caused the problem in the first place.
Valuing the feminine. There is little value in a woman thinking like a man. But there is great value in a man recognizing a woman's ancient and matriarchal problem solving skills.
Reduces racism. It's hard to make an enemy of someone you depend on for your success and your future.
Incorporates wisdom. Valuing the sacred wisdom of the elders by eliminating ageism can help an organization not make the same mistakes over and over again.
Imports the solutions of the Global South. All shoulders at the wheel.
There must be a rethinking of what true diversity looks like by copying nature and incorporating the many different ways life expresses itself. This trend is happening and may save the day from the immediate challenges the world of the past few centuries has visited upon us to today.

There is an emerging body of evidence that shows climate change is not only affecting our food supply, mass migration, poverty levels, the livability of our planet and generally create an extinction level event, but it is also having a serious effect on our mental health--- and it's not good.

WHAT CAN WE DO?
Over the years, I've shared some of the best advice out there that we can start to implement right now. Here are three things within your grasp....
Get formal support systems in place. Yes, its good to have the support of family and friends, but if you or someone you know is starting to demonstrate increased stress and anxiety, get them professional support in the form of a trained therapist, or even life coaches. We are in unprecedented times. It's time to take unprecedented actions.
Start engaging in Climate Change Adaptation planning. Most of the conversation out there is around climate change happening. Now we have to get to how do we live in a world in a state of flux. This helps people to wrap their heads around solutions instead of just the problem.
Get informed. Nothing breeds fear and anxiety more than ignorance. Get informed about what's going on and how you may be affected. This is the first step to making a plan.
A BUSINESS PLAN FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION
At one time, this was seen as an environmental problem and was compartmentalized by many as such. Now that it's being received as a human problem, here are three things businesses can do to navigate climate change adaptation.
Time for a technological upgrade. Of course, this is a unpopular suggestion because it means putting a bunch of money back into the business. But if you have your eyes on the future, you know many companies as they exist now will fall behind as society changes. Make your company climate change ready through technology.
Fully engage in public transportation. A massive effort for you and your employees as well as those in the associations you work with is needed now to at least slow down the rate of change. That means creating a zero impact carbon footprint. One way that can happen is by engaging public transportation. Immediately.
Incorporate climate change adaptation into your company's vision statement. It can't be something as flowery or as non-committal as "we hope to build a better world for our children, etc", but something specific, like "we will champion indoor gardening efforts to help feed communities around the world".
